Mobility Cup

In 1991, Sam Sullivan -- founder of the Disabled Sailing Association of BC -- envisioned a regatta in which people would come together to promote public awareness of the capacities of people with disabilities and to provide those with disabilities the opportunity to participate in a world class event. The Mobility Cup is recognized as Canada's international regatta for sailors with disabilities.

Under Sam Sullivan's inspiration and through the use of innovative Canadian technology, Canada has become a leader in making sailing accessible to people with severe disabilities. Because of this, high quadriplegic sailors -- those with no function below the neck -- can compete on a "level playing field" with their able-bodied colleagues, steering and trimming the sails with only their breath.

Mobility Cup has become Canada's showcase for the development of sailing programs for people with disabilities. Both local and national media have shown interest in the Mobility Cup and the event is well publicized. DSA tries to get the general public involved by inviting them to view the race as well as participate directly either as volunteers or competitors. DSA has attracted many sailors for around the world including the US, Puerto Rico and Europe.

Mobility Cup is an event the competitors never forget! Every year, participants take their experience and enthusiasm home with them, and initiate new DSA programs, sharing the freedom and excitement of sailing with other people with disabilities in their community. Host locations are:

Volunteer Development
and Orientation

Volunteers are necessary for the success of every DSA program. DSA has developed special literature and manuals outlining the volunteers’ responsibilities.

Orientation sessions are also held every summer to give them “hands-on” experience.

Workshops teach volunteers water safety and sailing skills, as well as familiarize them with the equipment used by DSA.
